The Case for Using Probabilistic Knowledge in a Computer Chess Program (John L. Jerz)
Resilience in Man and Machine

Chess 4.6 (authors: David Slate and Larry Atkin) gets a victory against a grandmaster in this simultaneous exhibition from 1978, as reported in the July 1978 issue of Chess Life and Review.

U.S. Champion Browne played 44 games at once, one of which was against Chess 4.6.  GM Browne's tour "had thus far produced an amazing winning streak, with only 2 losses and 6 draws in 17 exhibitions."

Chess 4.6 was running on a Control Data Corporation Cyber 176.

"In the course of this simul, CHESS 4.6 correctly projected 35 of Browne's 58 moves, not including those from the opening library. The largest number of positions examined for any one move was 2,158,456 in just over 9 minutes [2158456/9.1/60 = 3953 nodes/ sec] . In total, CHESS 4.6 used just over 4 hours of computation time, whereas GM Browne spent 26 minutes at the board."
