Nicholas Rescher

JLJ - Do you hear the organ music? Look over there, pastor Rescher of the Church of Rationality is preaching another sermon. Listen as he makes circular arguments about why we need to be rational, then claims they aren't circular. Rescher has no other concept for 'being' other than 'being rational', which is incorrect in my mind. Of course there are times we ought to be rational, but then there are times we ought to revel in the present moment.

p.23 And so, we follow reason because it makes good rational sense to do so, seeing that it affords us with the best visible prospect for realizing our objectives... The long and short of the matter is that nothing obliges us to be rational except our rationality itself.

[JLJ - Yawn. There is more to life than simply 'realizing our objectives'. Life at its core has a kind of 'breathing' pattern to it that comes from cycles of expending energy and recovering our energy. Life is lived in these cycles, rather than in pursuing goals, which simply go away once we have achieved them. We are rational, in my mind, when we strategically manage our cycles of expending our energy and recovery, so that we can expend again. Rescher's total devotion to the concept of rationality is, well, kind of irrational.]
