Are the modern state-of-the-art computer chess programs such as Stockfish strong enough for the white player to defeat a well-prepared opponent in this opening variation? There is only one way to find out.
The first few moves in this line are the most critical, as the resulting 8-on-7 pawn situation can easily result in a black 'fortress' which is hard for white to break open, or an attack by the black pieces which gives compensation for the f7 pawn.
This page is my assembled analysis and represents a work in progress. It could be a starting point for an individual or group correspondence-style chess game played from the Traxler starting position. Analysis runs are often stopped due to extended power failures, problems with a computer or a battery back-up, or after a look at my recent electric bill (!) Multiple standard Windows 7 machines are being used. Note the YYMMDD timestamp on the Stockfish program, as I use the current development build.
Black has so many ways to re-arrange his pieces in an attacking structure that it is unlikely that a true "mainline" will be arrived at. 5...Ke7 6.Bc4 Qe8 or 6...Rf8 is my choice for the mainline, as documented below.
5.Nxf7 is elsewhere proven to be a draw under best play, so we have to play 5.Bxf7+ or 5.d4
On 5.d4 black can try to squeak out a draw with 5...d5
