The rock group Iron Butterfly was quite fond of Velveeta cheese. In fact, the band members would often sing
this song to themselves as they relaxed between practice sessions and consumed large amounts of a certain "processed cheese
product".
On May 26, 1968, the band members began experimenting with the lyrics in the hopes that they could record
a new song, and the next day they they recorded a version with different lyrics that became a smashing hit.
Here are the original lyrics, which were discovered on a scrap of paper found on the floor of Ultrasonic
Studios in Hempstead, Long Island, and covered in parts with bits of old, sticky cheese.
Have a Slice of Velveeta (In-a-gadda-da-vida)
Have a slice of Vel-vee-ta honey, don'tcha know that I love you? Have a slice of Vel-vee-ta baby, don'tcha
know that I'll always want to?
Oh won'tcha taste with me, my fav'rite brand? Oh won'tcha taste with me, a cheese not bland?
Please taste my brand...
Let me tell ya now. Have a slice of Vel-vee-ta honey, don'tcha know that I love you? Have a slice
of Vel-vee-ta baby, don'tcha know that I'll always want to?
Oh won'tcha taste with me, my fav'rite brand? Oh won'tcha taste with me, a cheese not bland?
Please taste my brand...
Let me tell ya.
Two,three,four!
Have a slice of Vel-vee-ta honey, don'tcha know that I love you? Have a slice of Vel-vee-ta baby, don'tcha
know that I'll always want to?
